PERSONALITY:

PRIMARY ARC: Riku's Journey

Early childhood:
Even as a little boy growing up in the remote and peaceful Destiny Islands, Riku was always dreaming of a larger world. Inspired by stories of a boy who had previously departed from the Islands and never returned, little Riku yearned to gain the kind of strength that would allow him to do the same, and to keep his friends and loved ones safe from any harm. This desire to "protect the things that matter" proves to be the utmost core of Riku's character - he is at his weakest when he loses sight of that goal, and at his strongest when he strives toward it - and it is ultimately what led Terra to bestow upon Riku the power of a Keyblade wielder.

The storm and the fall:
Keeping his inheritance from Terra as a treasured secret even from Sora, Riku grew over the course of ten years into a brash young man, confident to the point of arrogance and projecting an aura of coolness. His impatience to see other worlds had also only grown with time, reaching a head as he planned together with Sora and Kairi to build a raft and voyage across the sea to other worlds: before they even had the chance to depart, Riku succumbed to Xehanort's manipulations and brought the forces of Darkness to the Destiny Islands, destroying them and scattering the three friends to different worlds.

Upon reuniting with Sora in Traverse Town, Riku was taken sorely aback to discover that Sora had not only met new friends to travel with, but had taken up the Keyblade that had been promised to Riku. Intensely jealous and feeling resentful of Sora for seemingly replacing him and Kairi so easily and for taking his place as a Keyblade wielder, and with Maleficent dangling the prospect of saving Kairi from her heartless state, Riku began to fall deeper into darkness, eventually losing sight of his original goal to "protect the things that matter". After taking the Keyblade back from Sora, only to be rejected by it a second time when he turned fully against his old friend, Riku reached his personal nadir when he surrendered his body to Xehanort's possession.

The road to dawn:
But once you've reached rock bottom, there's nowhere to go but up. Soon after his ill-fated bargain, Riku realized the magnitude of his error and remembered his central goal of protecting those he cherished. This rediscovery of himself gave him the strength to hold Xehanort back after Sora sacrificed his heart to save Kairi, just long enough for Kairi to escape safely and restore Sora in turn. And once that incarnation of Xehanort had been defeated, he assisted Sora and King Mickey in closing the Door to Darkness, restoring all the worlds that had been lost - at the cost of trapping himself in the Realm of Darkness, with no certain way out.

When a mysterious force drew him to the deepest basements of Castle Oblivion, Riku began a new journey: one in which he grappled with the darkness that had stained his heart, hating and fearing it even as he continued to rely on it in his battles against a copy of himself, the mysterious Organization, and the lingering traces of Xehanort's influence inside his heart. Despite Mickey's moral support from afar as the King journeyed to meet him in the castle, and viewing his reliance on the darkness as a detestable weakness and proof of his unworthiness, Riku nearly succumbed to a final defeat at the hands of Zexion, who tormented him with cruel reminders of what he had done to the Islands and an illusion of Sora that turned against him with an all-consuming light. However, he was given new hope and purpose by Naminé, appearing to him in the form of Kairi, who inspired him to accept and respect his darkness for what it was, neither fearing it nor giving into it. As Naminé had promised, this helped Riku to find a unique and unshakable strength of heart that would, together with Mickey's support, bolster him through his remaining battles in the castle and equip him to forge an alliance with DiZ. Pressed by DiZ to choose between light and darkness, Riku proclaimed that he would instead walk the middle road: the "road to dawn".

The way home:
This would not prove to be an easy path for Riku, of course. Over the next year, as Sora slept to regain his memories and Riku worked with DiZ and Naminé behind the scenes to stymie the Organization and smooth the road to Sora's recovery. In the course of this work, Riku found himself at odds with the Organization's two newest members, whose very existence was an impediment to the restoration of Sora's memories. Though he did not share DiZ's categorical hatred for Nobodies and indeed had some sympathy for Roxas and Xion, Riku was driven above all else by the single-minded purpose of helping Sora. After convincing Xion to give up her own independent existence, Riku ultimately sacrificed his own physical form to ensure Sora's return - taking on the form of Xehanort's Heartless to gain the power he needed to subdue Roxas and bring him to DiZ.

Triumphant, but unwilling to face his friend in the state he was in, Riku continued to work from the shadows to aid Sora's quest and to protect Kairi - in the course of which work, a new Keyblade finally manifested itself for him. Not until they crossed paths again in The World That Never Was would he reveal himself, and then only when Kairi intervened to ensure her friends would not separate again. The forgiveness and acceptance he received from Sora surprised him, and though he was still hesitant even after regaining his original form, with this support from his friends he was ultimately able to accept that he could still have a place with them when they returned home. He was even able to finally admit to his feelings of jealousy towards Sora and clear the air between them, and admit how much Sora means to him as a friend.

The Mark of Mastery:
Though Riku had grown tremendously through the events up to this point - from a child who just wanted to protect everyone he loved, to a boastful yet insecure and jealous rival, to a villain scrambling for power, to an antihero seeking redemption and rededicated to his desire to protect - he still remained uncertain of himself. For this reason, he was a bit hesitant when Yen Sid called him and Sora to the Mysterious Tower to undergo examination for the Mark of Mastery, but agreed to go through with it; both to be of more help in the coming battles, and to settle for himself once and for all whether he was worthy of his Keyblade.

As he and Sora traveled separately through the Sleeping Worlds, the events that transpired in those dreams gradually and subtly reaffirmed Riku's chosen course on the "road to dawn", and led him to two startling revelations. First: Xehanort had been carefully subverting Sora through the entire course of the examination, and Riku himself had instinctively made himself into a Dream Eater to protect him. Second: He had rendered himself immune to the corrupting effects of darkness, and to any further possession by Xehanort.

After the final battles in the dream worlds, and after Riku's stalwart desire to protect those he loves had led him to take one last, risky dive into Sora's sleeping and damaged heart to heal it, the examination was over - and Yen Sid granted Riku the proof he had needed of his worthiness, naming him the newest Keyblade Master.

Where we are now:
As of KH3 and immediately after, Riku has completed his long journey to redemption, and the realization of his potential as a Keyblade wielder. Though he still carries regrets, he is largely freed from his fears and doubts. He takes gladly to his new duties as a Master, applying himself fully to the search for the lost Keyblade wielders and offering support to the other guardians and their allies. In the disastrous first advance at the Keyblade Graveyard, he willingly sacrifices himself to protect Sora for just a few moments longer, believing in Sora to his last moment. Those events were overwritten, and it's unclear how much Riku or anyone remembers of them, but it shows how far Riku has come.

At the canon point I am taking Riku from, he's enjoying the hard-earned peace at the end of the Keyblade War, interested in properly acquainting himself with those who had been lost (and making amends to Roxas and Xion), and overjoyed to be reunited with Kairi and Sora. The traumas suffered on his journey and during the War are not forgotten, nor are his regrets, but he's happy for the opportunity to make a fresh start.

The fact that this fresh start is on a whole new world to explore is a nice bonus.

SECONDARY ARC: Riku, Nobodies, and the Replicas

In the preceding section, I touched only lightly on or largely glossed over any events having to do with the Riku Replica, Xion, Roxas, or Naminé. That's because these experiences are part of an arc within Riku's larger arc, which is a significant part of his personality in itself and, although understated in canon itself, heavily informs how I play him.

Riku's first experiences with each of these two kinds of liminal people are anything but positive. Vexen provokes him into a fight, from which he obtains the data used to create the Riku Replica; the Riku Replica himself is as arrogant and boastful as Riku once was, and takes pride in the very darkness that Riku is trying to deny. Thus, just as Riku begins the process of finding out just who he is after falling to Darkness and clawing his way out, he is presented with a mirror that reflects all the worst in him.

It isn't until Naminé comes to his rescue in the midst of Zexion's illusions that he has a positive experience with a Nobody at all, and even then he doesn't realize it until later. But her assistance and the way forward it provides for him fundamentally alters the course of his fate. Of all the friends who have helped him on his way, Naminé is among the most responsible for who and what he ultimately grows into, and his gratitude towards her is clear. They quickly establish a rapport when he meets her face to face, and presumably remain on good terms with one another while working for DiZ; Naminé's final action before returning to Kairi is to reveal Riku's identity to her, ensuring that Riku will be able to reconnect with his friends.

When he meets the Riku Replica again, it is in a very different emotional context for both of them. Riku has begun to come to terms with the parts of himself that he had hated seeing in the Replica, and the Replica is suffering an existential crisis. Although Riku was not privy to the precipitating events, it's immediately clear to him that something is wrong, and his hostility quickly gives way to concern. When Riku is forced to strike the Replica down regardless, he is clearly sorrowful about the circumstances and attempts to comfort the dying Replica. In the space of one encounter, the Replica has gone from being an enemy for Riku, to somebody that Riku regrets not being able to help.

He carries that trauma forward into his encounters with Xion. It's not clear what he sees under Xion's hood the first time they fight, but it rattles him badly and his behavior towards her in that scene is perhaps the cruelest he's been since the first game, most likely a desperate attempt to get some emotional distance. However, by the time of the encounter on Destiny Islands, when he witnesses her breakdown and holds her until she regains consciousness, he has presumably confirmed that she is a Replica herself, and is notably unable to maintain any pretense of hostility towards her - as if seeing her distress reminded him of his own Replica and made it impossible not to sympathize with her. He is very gentle with her through the rest of the encounter; though he is asking something terrible of her and he knows it, he makes sure to lay out the facts of the situation for her with minimal bias, is honest about his own stake in the matter - and ultimately encourages her to make her own decision, telling her to take some time and think about it.

Both this urging to "take the time you need", and his willingness to respect the autonomy and decisions of a Replica even if he disagrees with them, are echoed in the time he spends with the Riku Replica's displaced heart in KH3 - though he clearly wishes his Replica would take a second chance at life when the opportunity arrives, in the end Riku respects his decision to let Naminé have the chance instead.

Finally, though his interaction with Roxas is very limited and doesn't fit neatly into the sequence of segues I had going, Riku clearly has sympathy for Roxas's plight and regrets the necessity of forcing him to rejoin with Sora - he goes well out of his way to leave hints for Sora that lead to him becoming aware of Roxas and acknowledging him as a person worthy of his own existence.

POWERS/ABILITIES:

Keyblade: Riku possesses a Keyblade, a powerful weapon that also possesses the ability to seal or open any lock. Most of the time the Keyblade is not physically present; Riku can summon it to his hand at will, and dismiss it again to whatever unknown space it occupies when not in use. I would be okay with nerfing the Keyblade's unlocking power as necessary to prevent Riku from getting into places he shouldn't be able to.

Darkness: In Kingdom Hearts cosmology, everything is composed of Light and Darkness; most particularly, individuals possess varying amounts of both Light and Darkness inside their hearts. (The core of a person's being, distinct from the cardiovascular organ.) Riku has gained the ability to use and manipulate elemental Darkness in various ways, such as:

  • Infusing a fireball with it for a dark-elemental attack

  • Forming an impenetrable but short-lived barrier to defend himself or others

  • Facilitating a double-jump by gathering darkness under his feet in mid-air to serve as a platform to push off from

  • Phasing through space quickly for very short distances for a boost of speed, to avoid an attack, or to facilitate a "shadow-clone"-style multi-attack

Ordinarily, using Darkness is fairly hazardous, but due to his experiences in fighting off possession and the unique balance he's been able to find within himself, Riku is resistant to the Darkness's corrupting effects.

Smell: Riku has a supernatural sixth sense that functions like a secondary sense of smell; he is able to smell "darkness", in its capacity as of the metaphysical building blocks of Kingdom Hearts' cosmology. Although he experiences this sense as "scent", he isn't perceiving actual scent particles of anything and there are some noticeable differences between this sense and mundane scent. He can reliably identify individuals by scent, make a good guess as to whether someone he's never met is friend or foe based on the smell of their darkness, and can perceive them from an incredible distance (in canon, he was able to pinpoint the moment a certain adversary died by the disappearance of his scent - despite being thirteen storeys down at the time). He also appears to be able to smell even mundane shadows to some extent, as he is able to navigate and even fight effectively while blindfolded, which suggests that his sense of smell is a serviceable replacement for sight.

Power of Waking: This ability is somewhat ill-defined within canon, but seems to be the ability to restore a damaged or "sleeping" heart to an active and healthy state. This can be accomplished by entering a metaphorical representation of the heart, which Riku can explore to find things that are hidden, repair any damage, and potentially make changes. The power carries considerable risk, and Riku is very sparing with his use of it.

Parkour: Riku is really good at traversing challenging/vertical/inhospitable terrain. Actual physics are treated as a gentle suggestion. It's an action-RPG character thing.

Magic: Riku is reasonably adept at casting magic spells as defined in his canon.
